year story took place in. 2014.
country birth took place in. united states.
Later that day I went to my appointment, I waited in the waiting room for almost an hour before being seen. They finally called me back to take my vitals and turns out my blood pressure was 162/110 and I had gone from a 1 in protein in my urine to a 4 in just 3 days. They checked the baby, and he was fine, but they didn't want to take any chances. So they sent me to the hospital for monitoring until my 37th week of pregnancy. This was on a Monday. Off to the hospital we go. We arrived to antepartum around 6:30 that evening and they hooked me up to the monitors. After taking my blood pressure about five times, they called the doctor and due to still having high blood pressure they decided to go ahead and induce that day!!! I was so scared because my baby was not full term and I was worried he would come out with complications.
After being hauled to Labor and Delivery they got me hooked up to an IV and started giving me medicine for my blood pressure. After inserting Cervidil they waited for me to be at least 70% effaced and then gave me pitocin. Around 3am I was only 2cm dilated and was able to get the epidural. The next day (Tuesday the 31st- New Years Eve) around 7am the nurse came in to check me and I was only 4cm dilated. That was a longgggg day for me... around noon I was still only 4cm dilated. Then came 3am (New Years Day) the nurse came to check me again and I was finally making progress at 6cm dilated. By that point I was starting to feel pain again but not enough to where I needed more epidural. Finally at 8am they came in to check me again and by that time I had been in labor for 34 hours The epidural had worn off so I was feeling everything. The nurse checked me and I was 8cm dilated. So it was time to start prepping for delivery. 10 minutes later they checked me again and I was finally at a 10.
By that time I felt that urge that all women talk about (the urge to push). The doctor still wasn't at the hospital, did I mention it wasn't my doctor delivering me? He was on vacation. The nurses kept telling me not to push till the doctor got there. The doctor arrived around 9:57 am and I was able to start pushing at 10:00 am. 6 minutes later at 10:06am my baby boy was born! 5.07lbs and 18 1/4 inches long.
At this point they cleaned him off, wrapped him up, and let me hold him for about 2 minutes then passed him to dad and let him hold him for the same amount of time. Then they whisked him away to the NICU. I could not see my baby for 24 hours after delivery due to being on magnesium. His daddy was able to go see him and showed me pictures. He was perfect! After 24 hours I was taken to post partum and was able to go visit my baby. He was the most beautiful, tiny baby I had ever seen. He was a fighter and after 11 days he was able to come home.
He is my first born and I never knew true love until the day I heard his little cry! Truly a blessing!
